Hey Ram! Congress follows BJP, endorses Ram temple, 'woos' Hindutva

By Bhabani Shankar Nayak*

‘Hey Ram’ were the last words of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. He uttered these words on January 30,1948 while taking bullets from his assassin, a Hindutva terrorist called Nathuram Godse. The Hindutva politics of hate-filled bullets from the Beretta automatic pistol killed the Mahatma. This was the first onslaught on the secular and multicultural fabric of independent India.
Like the three bullets that killed Gandhi, December 6, 1992, November 9, 2019 and August 5, 2020 are three defining dates that killed secular India. These three dates are significant in dismantling of the secular character of Indian state and politics. These three dates are central towards the establishment of Hindu Rashtra in India. The process was started with the killing of Mahatma Gandhi. It continues to create havoc and enduring pain within the Indian republic.
The activists belong to the VHP, BJP, RSS and other affiliated organisations were responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. The demolition of Babri Masjid has accelerated the deepening of Masjid-Mandir (temple) politics in India led by Hindutva, a bigoted political and economic project of Brahmanical propertied caste, class and capital.
The landslide electoral victory of BJP in general elections led by Narendra Modi has given pan Indian political legitimacy to the Hindutva forces. But the Hindutva political project has received its judicial legitimacy, when the Supreme Court of India ordered the Government of India to create a trust to build the Ram temple in the disputed land and give five acres of land in another place to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque.
The Supreme Court’s Ayodhya verdict has ended legal dispute between Hindus and Muslims. The contradictory judicial verdict is a victory of religious faith based on Hindutva mythology; the life and blood of Hindutva politics.
The verdict did not punish the Hindutva forces and their organisations for dismantling a historic monument; 470 years old mosque. The verdict has given new life to the political vandalism of Hindutva forces in the name of establishing a Hindu Rashtra by destroying secular India.
Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Modi, as Prime Minister of India and the poster boy of Hindutva politics, laid foundation stone for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya on August 5, 2020. He  also released a commemorative postage stamp called “Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir”.
Leaders of the Indian National Congress and some opposition parties consider Ram temple in Ayodhya is a product of national consensus. It means Hindutva consensus. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has not only endorsed the construction of Ram temple but also considers the ground-breaking ceremony of the temple as an occasion for "national unity, fraternity and cultural congregation".
The Hindutva politics is immersed with hate, violence and vandalism. It cannot inspire national confidence, cultural unity and fraternity. The statement by Priyanka Gandhi shows the influence of Hindutva politics on mainstream opposition parties and its leaders in India. The ‘Hey Ram India’ signifies the assassination of secular politics and state in India on August 5, 2020 by the BJP and Congress Party.
The era of closet Hindutva is over. The launch of the culture of ‘Jai Sri Ram’ within Congress represents the rise of Congress model of Hindutva and the death of secular, Nehruvian and Gandhian Congress Party. There is no difference between Hindutva politics of BJP and Congress Party that helps to establish the higher caste based Hindu social order destroying multicultural fabric of Indian society.
Launch of culture of Jai Sri Ram within Congress represents rise of Congress model of Hindutva, death of secular, Nehruvian, Gandhian legacy
Both parties follow the same neoliberal economic policies that consolidate the powers of big businesses and capitalist classes in India. The difference in political flag colour and office locations does not matter. These two national parties are detrimental to the idea of India. Both political parties are threat to life and livelihoods of poor masses in India.
The circulation of elites defines both political formations, which failed to provide any alternative for the relief and rehabilitation of people from the pandemic of hunger, ill-health, homelessness and joblessness. The deceptive politics of BJP and Congress Party can never offer any form of alternatives to India and Indians during the current social, economic and military crisis.
Both the political parties represent the interests of the local, regional, national and global capitalist classes in India. The Hindutva led caste based social, political and economic order is concomitant with the requirements of capitalism. The political consensus and judicial legitimacy have given a final touch to the process of writing the last secular and democratic epitaph for Indian pluriveralism.
It is truly the start of new India led by Hindutva, where there is money for temples and statues but there is no money for health and education. There is money to subsidise and write off debts of big businesses but there is no money for farmers, students and youths of India. Such a pathetic transformation did not happen overnight or over last six years.
The casteist and conservative undercurrent of Hindu Brahmanical social order has received its political patronage from the Narendra Modi led BJP government. This has helped the upper caste and class bigotry to become mainstream social, political and economic order in India.
The idea of secular and democratic India was demolished with the destruction of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. The success of Hindutva political project in India was verified and reconfirmed with the start of the Ram temple construction on August 5, 2020.
The Hindutva triumphalism is undisputedly the new order in India today, where political despondency, social alienation and economic crisis rules. But hope comes up from unusual sources to inspire the resilient masses. Hindutva politics is a national shame and it cannot write the final words on the future of India and Indians.
The civilisation survived all onslaughts of time. The graveyards of time have swallowed all prides, empires and emperors within all its powerful waves and allow history to document the death of all winners to give hope to a hopeless world in India. Hope redeems itself as alternatives.
It is only the human heritage of peace outlives time to tell stories of successful struggles for justice, equality, liberty and fraternity. It is time to conserve energy and fight for the future. The fake gully boys and their deceptive politics of Hindutva will fall like all other regimes drunk in power.
This time shall pass and “apna time ayega” (our time shall come), for the gullible masses to enjoy their freedom and dreams of life in peace and prosperity.

Counterview Desk In a letter to the Government of India (GoI), three senior United Nations (UN) officials – Elina Steinerte, vice-chair of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention; Mary Lawlor, special rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders; and Fernand de Varennes, special rapporteur on minority issues – have said that the arrest of veteran activist Father Stan Swamy in October 2020 marks “the escalation of harassment the human rights defender has been subjected to since 2018.”

Swami Vivekananda's views on caste and sexuality were 'painfully' regressive

By Bhaskar Sur* Swami Vivekananda now belongs more to the modern Hindu mythology than reality. It makes a daunting job to discover the real human being who knew unemployment, humiliation of losing a teaching job for 'incompetence', longed in vain for the bliss of a happy conjugal life only to suffer the consequent frustration.

Farm laws 'precursor' to free trade deal envisaged by US corporates to allow GMO

By Rajiv Shah Did the Government of India come up with the three farm laws, first rushed by promulgating ordinances in June 2020, to not just open the country’s agricultural sector to the corporate sector but also as a precursor to comply with the requirements of the United States for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), as envisaged by the outgoing US president Donald Trump?

Modi govt 'implementing' IMF-envisaged corporate takeover of Indian agriculture

By Bhabani Shankar Nayak* The surge of wealth of Indian billionaires and the Modi-led BJP government’s onslaught on poor, marginalised and farmers continue to grow simultaneously as masses face annihilating pandemic of coronavirus. There is 90 % rise of Indian billionaire’s wealth over last one decade. It is not accidental.

Differing from Ambedkar, Kancha Ilaiah holds a 'different' theory of caste system

By Banavath Aravind* I was introduced to Kancha Ilaiah’s work when I was about 20 years old. He was then in the midst of a controversy for a chapter in his book "Post-Hindu India: A Discourse in Dalit-Bahujan, Socio-Spiritual and Scientific Revolution", which termed the Baniya community as social smugglers. During many of his debates, I had come to notice his undeterred fighting spirit in trying to bring up certain fundamental social issues that were hitherto undiscussed. I eventually came across some of his works and started reading them silently. I’m deliberately stressing upon the word ‘silently’ here, as this was the kind of silence particularly associated with sensitive social issues like caste, religion, etc. But, as I write this essay, I feel silences on sensitive issues should be broken. Ilaiah opened up an entirely new debate that had the vigour and strength to counter the systemic Brahmanism. His methods of research were also novel in terms of going back to the roo

Fr Stan's arrest figures in UK Parliament: Govt says, Indian authorities were 'alerted'

London protest for release of Stan Swamy  By Rajiv Shah Will Father Stan Swamy’s arrest, especially the fact that he is a Christian and a priest, turn out to be major international embarrassment for the Government of India? It may well happen, if a recent debate on a resolution titled “India: Persecution of Minority Groups” in the United Kingdom (UK) Parliament is any indication. While Jesuits have protested Fr Stan's arrest in UK and US, the resolution, adopted in the Parliament, said, “This House has considered the matter of persecution of Muslims, Christians and minority groups in India”.

More than 5,200 Gujarat schools to be closed down, merged, says govt document

RTE Forum, Gujarat, releasing fact-sheet on education By Our Representative A Gujarat government document has revealed that it is planning to close down 5,223 schools in the name of school merger. The document, dated July 20, 201 was released by the Right to Education (RTE) Forum, Gujarat. It shows that the worst-affected districts because of this merger are those which are populated by marginalized communities – especially tribals, Dalits and minorities, said RTE Forum’s Gujarat convener Mujahid Nafees.

Consumption pattern, not economic shock behind 'poor' child health indicators

By Neeraj Kumar, Arup Mitra* The findings of the latest round of National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) conducted in 2019-20 covering 22 States/UTs under Phase-I  present a somewhat disappointing picture of children’s health in India. Majority of the experts, based on prima facie evidence, just highlighted the deteriorating sign of child health in terms of increase in proportion of stunted and underweight children in most of the phase-I states/UTs over last two rounds of NFHS (2015-16 to 2019-20).

A new fad in India, coding-for-toddlers culture needs to be 'nipped' in the bud

By Aditya Pandey* We are all aware of the dire consequences of subjecting young kids to intense academic pressure from an early age. In India, we have coaching institutes like FIITJEE and Resonance offering programmes for 6th standard kids to prepare them for “NTSE, IJSO, PRMO and other Olympiads”. The duration of these programmes is around 175 hours – hours that could've been spent playing games and making friends instead.
