In the wake of the devastating Air India Dreamliner crash at the IGP Campus in Ahmedabad, a disturbing new development has come to light. Students housed in hostels within the campus — which also houses a medical college — are reportedly being evicted by authorities without any provision for alternative accommodation.
The All India Democratic Students’ Organization (AIDSO), Gujarat State Committee, has strongly condemned what it called the "insensitive and anti-student" actions by the administration. A delegation from AIDSO attempted to visit the crash site but was denied access due to security restrictions. However, they were able to speak to affected students, who confirmed that they were being forced out of their hostels — many still in shock and mourning the loss of peers and classmates.
“These students are already in trauma due to the unnatural deaths of their peers,” said Rimmi Vaghela, Secretary of the Gujarat State Committee of AIDSO. “Many of their classmates and family members, who are injured, are still under treatment in hospitals. In such a critical time, sensitivity was expected from the authorities. Evicting them with their belongings without any alternative accommodation is an entirely insensitive and anti-student action.”
The crash, which involved an Air India Boeing 787 shortly after take-off, has left the city reeling. The IGP Campus, near the crash site, suffered collateral damage and has become the focal point of both the tragedy and the administrative response that followed.
AIDSO has also pointed out that despite the scale of the disaster, no compensation has yet been announced for the families of the deceased, the injured, the resident doctors, or other affected campus residents.
“We know very well that the Gujarat Government has enough alternative accommodation arrangements for such kinds of emergency situations,” Vaghela emphasized. “We demand that the affected students be provided with proper housing immediately. Compensation should also be announced and disbursed without further delay.”
The organization has called for immediate intervention by both the Gujarat Government and the central authorities to address what they describe as a humanitarian and moral failure in the aftermath of a national tragedy.
