Ram Temple bhoomi poojan with Bhagwat as chief guest 'violates' Modi's oath as PM

By Shamsul Islam*

The sovereign-democratic Indian Republic came into existence on January 26, 1950 coinciding with the promulgation of a historic constitution which in its Preamble declared its firm commitment to "Justice, social, economic and political; Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; Equality of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all Fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation…"
This Republic appears to be slated for public execution on August 5, 2020 with great pomp and show at Ayodhya. The issue is not building of a peerless Ram Temple at the place where once Babri Mosque stood. The legitimacy for the construction of the Temple was 'managed' courtesy the highest court of justice of India.
Betraying all norms of fair-play, rule of law and common sense, the Supreme Court approved construction of the Temple despite admitting also that that no Temple was destroyed to build the Babri mosque in the past, it was illegal to place the Ram idols in the Mosque on the night of 22-23 December 1949 and destruction of the Mosque by the Hindutva mob on December 6, 1992 was a criminal act.
There is no doubt that the Temple has the judicial sanction despite the criticism that what Hindutva zealots could not achieve on December 6, 1992 was facilitated through judiciary.
This rushing up with the construction of the Temple at Ayodhya is a serious set-back to the Indian democratic-secular polity but a far more dangerous spectacle appears to have unrolled at Ayodhya on August 5 where Narender Modi as Prime Minister of India performed bhoomi poojan [land-worship] for the Temple in the afternoon in the august presence of RSS supremo Mohanrao Bhagwat as chief guest.
This moment is the final death blow to Indian Republic, the hectic preparations for which were afoot with Modi's ascendancy to power. In fact, it started earlier when Modi, as chief minister of Gujarat, while talking to two Reuters journalists, Ross Colvin and Sruthi Gottipati, on July 12, 2013, had identified himself as a ‘Hindu Nationalist’ and credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for instilling in him the spirit of a patriot.
The Ayodhya ceremony, from all accounts, would go down in history as 'vadh' ceremony (a Brahmanical ritual) of the Indian Republic. When Modi did his bhoomi pooja at Ayodhya in the presence of RSS chief Bhagwat, the chief guest, he seemed to be violating the oath he took last time in 2019 as PM of democratic-secular Indian polity as RSS is dead against what Modi committed himself to.
Modi when taking over as PM in 2014 and 2019 took the following oath as prescribed in the Constitution:
"I, (name), do swear in the name of God/solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India, that I will faithfully and conscientiously discharge my duties as a Minister for the Union and that I will do right to all manner of people in accordance with the Constitution and the law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will."
PM thus is committed to uphold the constitution which according to the Supreme Court has following elements as 'basic-structure', sovereignty, democratic and secular character of the polity, rule of law, independence of the judiciary, fundamental rights of citizens. This commitment of the PM Modi needs to be compared with the oath a RSS member takes where each RSS member is committed to work only for 'Hindu religion, Hindu society, and Hindu culture '. It reads:
“Before the all powerful God and my ancestors, I most solemnly take this oath, that I become a member of the RSS in order to achieve all round greatness of Bharatvarsha by fostering the growth of my sacred Hindu religion, Hindu society, and Hindu culture. I shall perform the work of the Sangh honestly, disinterestedly, with my heart and soul, and I shall adhere to this goal all my life. Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”
RSS has demanded that democratic-secular framework of the Constitution should be replaced by Manusmriti, known for its derogatory references to Dalits and women
RSS has been demanding that democratic-secular Indian wanted this Constitution should be replaced by Manusmriti or Manu Code which is known for its derogatory and inhuman references to Sudras, Untouchables and women. The Constituent Assembly of India finalized the Constitution of India on November 26, 1949, RSS was not happy. Its organ, “Organiser” in an editorial on November 30, 1949, complained:
"But in our Constitution there is no mention of the unique constitutional development in ancient Bharat. Manu’s Laws were written long before Lycurgus of Sparta or Solon of Persia. To this day his laws as enunciated in the Manusmriti excite the admiration of the world and elicit spontaneous obedience and conformity. But to our constitutional pundits that means nothing."
How loyal the RSS is to the Constitution of India can be known by the following statement of MS Golwalkar, the most prominent RSS ideologue. It is being reproduced from “Bunch of Thoughts” which is not only selection of the writings of Golwalkar but also a Bible for the RSS cadres.
"Our Constitution too is just a cumbersome and heterogeneous piecing together of various articles from various Constitutions of Western countries. It has absolutely nothing which can be called our own. Is there a single word of reference in its guiding principles as to what our national mission is and what our keynote in life is?"
When India resolved to become a democratic-secular Republic RSS, following in the footsteps of Savarkar, rejected out rightly the idea that Hindus and Muslims and other religious communities together constituted a nation. The English organ of the RSS, "Organiser", on the very eve of Independence (August 14, 1947) editorially chalked out its concept of nation in the following words:
"Let us no longer allow ourselves to be influenced by false notions of nationhood. Much of the mental confusion and the present and future troubles can be removed by the ready recognition of the simple fact that in Hindusthan only the Hindus form the nation and the national structure must be built on that safe and sound foundation…the nation itself must be built up of Hindus, on Hindu traditions, culture, ideas and aspirations."
The RSS organ in the same issue denigrated the National Flag (which PM Modi is supposed to honour) in the following words:
"The people who have come to power by the kick of fate may give in our hands the Tricolour but it will never be respected and owned by Hindus. The word three is in itself an evil, and a flag having three colours will certainly produce a very bad psychological effect and is injurious to a country."
The RSS, contrary to the principles of democracy, has been constantly demanding India to be ruled under a totalitarian regime. Golwalkar while delivering a speech at the RSS headquarters before 1350 top level cadres of the RSS in 1940 declared:
"RSS inspired by one flag, one leader and one ideology is lighting the flame of Hindutva in each and every corner of this great land.”
In the history of independent India there has never been such a brazen ganging up of an Indian PM with the RSS. The Temple at Ayodhya, ostensibly, is being celebrated as redressal of the 'wrong-done" by Muslims in the past, but the reality is that 'Hindu nationalist' PM is using the occasion as an opportunity to put Indian Republic to death.
Post-script: It may be interesting to note that Goswami Tulsi Das (1522-16230), who played the most prominent role in popularizing the story of Ram by penning “Ramcharitmanas” in India, and was the greatest worshipper of Ram, did not mention in his epic penned in 1575-76 that Babri mosque was built at the site of Ram Temple in the years 1538-39.

Nalanda mahavihara By Our Representative Prominent historian DN Jha, an expert in India's ancient and medieval past, in his new book , "Against the Grain: Notes on Identity, Intolerance and History", in a sharp critique of "Hindutva ideologues", who look at the ancient period of Indian history as "a golden age marked by social harmony, devoid of any religious violence", has said, "Demolition and desecration of rival religious establishments, and the appropriation of their idols, was not uncommon in India before the advent of Islam".

Gyanvapi case: Use of 'illegal' lawfare to keep the communal pot simmering

By Venkatesh Narayanan, Bobby Ramakant, Manoj Sarang* With a steady drumbeat of bad news for the lives of ordinary citizens --  inflation at a multi-year high , rupee at an all-time low , negative job creation and when all forward indicators as seen by industry leaders point to recessionary clouds on the horizon , what’s a serially-incompetent government to do?  Dust out their time-tested-citizen-distraction playbook. The Gyanvapi-Masjid case is all of this -- as a weapon of mass distraction. This zeitgeist of our times is best captured by a recent opinion piece : "The idea is to keep the pot on a perpetual boil, simmering at the top, whirling feverishly beneath. A restless society forever living precariously on the precipice arouses distrst, uneasiness, fear and discomfort, That is a toxic panoply for manufacturing rage, which can then be effortlessly mobilized at short notice. BJP is creating an eco-system of real-time instant delivery of hate-mongers. That is how we are sudde

Upholding labour rights, Nehruvian scientific temper, Rajni Patel opposed Emergency

By Harsh Thakor*  Rajni Patel, who died 40 years ago, whatever his flaws, had one great quality: his human touch to offer selfless service and ability to galvanise or influence human beings from all walks of life. Few people would ever go out of the way to help someone or serve as selflessly without aim of personal gain. Rajni championed Nehruvian secular ideas and scientific temper. As a master in public relations he revealed utmost humility. As a barrister, he never appeared against the trade unions or workers. A Fabien Socialist he opposed liberal capitalism and radical socialism. Unlike most lawyers, he did not succumb to the lure of amassing wealth. Rajni was born in Sirsa, in Gujarat, on the very day Gandhi set foot on Indian soil, on 9th January, 1915. He gained his baptism through one of Gandhi's speeches calling for the boycott of foreign goods, which was the virtual turning point of his life. Rajni toed Gandhi to organise boycott of foreign goods. Rajni was able to cros

Targeting mosques, churches: 'Roadmap' for 2025, RSS' centenary year?

416 years old Our Lady of Health Church, Sancoale, Goa  By Fr Cedric Prakash SJ*  Fascists use manipulative strategies aimed at whipping up sympathy and support from the majority community, to which they normally ‘belong’. They do so in a variety of insidious and subtle ways. In the past few months, they have gone overboard in their efforts to denigrate and demonize minorities in India, particularly Muslims and Christians. They have spewed hate and divisiveness through their venomous speeches; incited people to violence and have effectively used officialdom to further their vested interests. The results are there for all to see: greater polarisation of the majority community in a country which prided itself for its pluralism and diversity. Their meticulously planned agenda is in order to gain absolute power of the country in the 2024 national elections. More so it is also a roadmap towards 2025 when the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will complete one hundred years of its existence.

Vadodara violence: Fine Arts Faculty alumni raise fingers at Varsity's political appointee

Hasmukh Vaghela with PM Counterview Desk  In a statement, alumni of the Faculty of Fine Arts (FoFA), Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Baroda, Gujarat, referring to the “violence” by right-wing groups for displaying “objectionable” paintings that “hurt religious sentiments” at the one of India’s top fine arts institute May 5, have taken strong exception to “the assault and rustication” of one of the students, and lack of action taken against those who “violated” the institution and committed the act. Floated as an online petition seeking wider support, the FoFA alumni, in their statement, addressed to the vice chancellor, MSU, said, there should be “thorough” investigation in the whole incident and “immediate action” should be taken against syndicate member Hasmukh Vaghela, MSU, who sparked the assault, and “other co-conspirators” for breaching “university code of conduct and unlawful activities committed in broad daylight”. While the alumni statement doesn't say so, Vaghela

UK leader cites Indian farmers' struggle one of top global fights against neoliberal order

Welfare? Govt of India spends just 19% of manual scavengers' rehabilitation budget

By Bharat Dogra*  While the Dalit community has been always known for higher levels of poverty as well as social discrimination, even within the Dalits there is a sub-section known for even worse levels of poverty as well as social discrimination. This is the section which was traditionally involved in manual scavenging. The shocking injustice they have suffered from over the years has been widely recognized leading to a ban on manual scavenging. At the same time there is urgent need for the rehabilitation of those engaged in manual scavenging. Hence a self-employment scheme for the rehabilitation of those engaged in manual scavenging was drawn up. The allocations and the expenditure for this scheme for the last eight years are shown in the Table below: Union Budget for Self-Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of  Manual Scavengers (in Rs crore) By Budget Estimate we mean the original allocation made when the budget is presented. It is clear from this table that the actual expenditure

A former Modi ally, Prashant Kishor wanted to enter Congress 'on contract, as trader'

By Anand Sahay*  The Congress Party and the election campaigns specialist Prashant Kishor, whose company has done strategic communications for a host of political parties across ideology, should both count themselves lucky that they could not reach an agreement for Kishor to join the party. News reports suggest that the Congress rejected Kishor’s terms. This is not wholly unexpected. People join a party because they are attracted to it, and wish to serve it in any capacity that the party may see fit. But that isn’t Kishor at all. He gave the impression of entering into a contract, as a trader might. If news reports are to be believed, he sought freedom to report directly to party chief Sonia Gandhi, and sought untrammeled control over party communications. When such ideas did not find favour, the consultant withdrew. It is clear he has no particular love for the Congress, and its ideas, ideology and politics. In contrast, look at the key personae in G-23. They
