Starting Aug 2023 Srinagar's Dal Lake to get rid of 70,000 tons of waste every year

Leading clean energy provider CEF Group leaps forward in the green energy revolution and announces conversion of 70,000 tons of lake waste, like weeds, and lilies from Dal Lake, Jammu & Kashmir, into organic manure and allied products. The conversion process will kick-start in August 2023 at the waste processing plant of CEF Group, where Dal Lake waste will be treated and processed in the CEF plant being set up in Srinagar to produce more than 20 thousand tons of organic manure.
Asserting the importance of waste management to yield organic manure, Mr. Maninder Singh Nayyar, Founder & CEO of CEF Group, said, "Every year, thousands of tons of waste is generated from the Dal Lake, which poses problems for local people in the area and adds pollutants to the environment. We are aiming to resolve this problem at the root level. We have the technology, expertise and experience of converting this extracted waste into 24,000 tons of organic manure annually. It will help farmers go organic farming and serve waste management purposes for people involved in jobs at Dal Lake. Moreover, organic manure produced from the waste will be available at local farmers' disposal, boosting their yield and promoting organic farming in the region. The farmers of Kashmir pay heavy prices for organic manure as currently it is supplied from states like UP and Haryana because of which they have to bear high transportation costs. With this project, organic manure will be available to farmers at reasonable costs. In addition, the waste processing plant will generate employment opportunities for local people. This project will elevate organic farming in the region and aid in replacing chemical fertilizers".
Lake waste like weeds, lilies, and others accounts for 70,000 tonnes of waste every year in Dal Lake hindering boat movements in the lake and causing problems for locals earning from Dal Lake tourism. With the help of CEF Group's waste processing plant in Srinagar, Kashmir, these wastes will be extracted and provided to the company at their project site to convert them into usable organic manure and allied products.
Dr. Bashir Ahmad Bhat (IRS), Vice Chairman of Dal Lake Authority, said, "Lake waste has been a long-time problem, and we are glad that CEF Group and NAFED in collaboration are providing sustainable solutions. In addition to waste processing, organic manure will be produced in the state itself, which will benefit local farmers and communities financially. Local employment by the company will aid the earnings of the area's local people. We hope to take this collaboration to a greater height so that rising climate change concerns are addressed."
The efforts to reduce waste from Dal Lake will contribute mainly to reducing carbon footprints and access to high-quality organic manure for the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
Kamlendra Srivastava, ED, NAFED, said “We need to increase such collaborations and innovative solutions to achieve our climate change goals and promote green growth in the country. We believe that the Dal Lake waste processing plant will inspire other states to incorporate such partnerships and promote environmentally sustainable solutions for waste management.”
The increasing use of organic manure will bring tremendous social, economic, and environmental benefits to the state and the nation. There are manifold benefits associated with organic waste. To name a few, it delivers the inert forms of nutrients that enrich the soil, cost benefits, and increases yields by high quality. It provides constructive and life-enhancing ways with natural systems and cycles. And last but foremost, it uses waste and produces a viable product.
