Adani group takeover of NDTV is doubtless at the behest of the government of the day

Delhi Union of Journalists statement on Adani takeover of NDTV, signed by S.K.Pande and Sujata Madhok, President and General Secretary, respectively:

The Last News Bastion Crumbles
The Delhi Union of Journalists is shocked at news reports that NDTV is being bought up by the Adani Group. It is evident that the two oligarchs of the Indian economy have decided to parcel out the entire media industry between them, leaving no room for independent players.
TV media has increasingly become the voice of the corporates and certain political parties. Cross media holdings and media monopolies ensure that the views of the government and big business are replicated without deviation across channels. So blatant is the bias that during every people's movement there is open rejection of certain TV channels and their anchors. Both during the CAA protests and the farmers' struggle, people loudly questioned the propaganda blitzkrieg by these channels. We regret the biased role played by some anchors who have brought media credibility to an all time low. Balanced, ethical reportage, analysis and debate has been replaced by shrill propaganda.
As professional journalists we are deeply disappointed and discouraged by the hostile takeover of the last independent mainstream TV channel. NDTV will now be used to promote the Adani empire which spans multiple business enterprises within the country and abroad. Fair reportage of developments spanning multiple sectors, ranging from mining to ports, airports, food grains, edible oils, cement and energy will become impossible.
We salute the brave staff and management of NDTV who have stood up to multiple pressures and challenges in these past years to bring us both news and views from a professional perspective. We fear that there will be firings and forced resignations of independent journalists. We are deeply concerned for their future.
The takeover of NDTV is doubtless at the behest of the government of the day which brooks no opposition, be it from media, civil society or political adversaries. The move will reinforce the narrow, unipolar worldview of the ruling party and impose it further on citizens. The illusion that India is still a democracy now lies shattered.

Sardar made up his mind on Pakistan in Dec 1946 "before" Mountbatten's Partition Plan

By Hari Desai* One has to be extra cautious while dealing with the history of towering personalities of the Indian freedom struggle, especially that of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (October 31, 1875 - December 15, 1950). Present-day politicians prefer to "pronounce” on his life and quote him according to their convenience like a blind person describing an elephant.

By Shamsul Islam*  Balraj Madhok's died on May 2, 2016 ending an era of old guards of Hindutva politics. A senior RSS pracharak till his death was paid handsome tributes by the RSS leaders including PM Modi, himself a senior pracharak, for being a "stalwart leader of Jan Sangh. Balraj Madhok ji's ideological commitment was strong and clarity of thought immense. He was selflessly devoted to the nation and society. I had the good fortune of interacting with Balraj Madhok ji on many occasions". The RSS also issued a formal condolence message signed by the Supremo Mohan Bhagwat on behalf of all swayamsevaks, referring to his contribution of commitment to nation and society. He was a leading RSS pracharak on whom his organization relied for initiating prominent Hindutva projects. But today nobody in the RSS-BJP top hierarchy remembers/talks about Madhok as he was an insider chronicler of the immense degeneration which was spreading as an epidemic in the high echelons of th...

Jiyaji Rao Scindia By  A  Representative In an email alert to Counterview, well-known political scientist Shamsul Islam has said that was “shameful for any political party in democratic India to keep children of Sindhias in their flock” given their role during the First War of Indian Independence (1857).
