Kargil–Leh padyatra for sixth schedule, full statehood to begin Sept 10; civil rights group extends full support

The civil rights group, Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), has announced its full support for the Ladakh Peace and Justice March, a foot march from Kargil to Leh scheduled from September 10 to 24, with the organisers calling for the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, full statehood for the Union Territory and justice for the victims of the September 24, 2025 incident in Leh.
The announcement followed a meeting of the KDA attended by its Co-Chairmen Asgar Ali Karbalai and Sajjad Kargili, members of the alliance and other concerned stakeholders. Ladakh MP Hanifa Jan was also present at the meeting.
Addressing a press conference after the meeting, KDA Co-Chairman Asgar Ali Karbalai said the alliance would continue its peaceful and democratic struggle for the constitutional, democratic and legitimate rights of the people of Ladakh.
Karbalai said the movement would continue until the Union Territory Administration and the Government of India recognise and address the legitimate rights and demands of the people of the Kargil and Leh regions. He said the KDA would extend full support to the Peace and Justice March and work for its smooth coordination.
KDA Co-Chairman and March Convenor Sajjad Kargili will provide regular media briefings during the march to keep the public and media informed about its progress, while also overseeing its monitoring and coordination.
According to the programme, the march will begin from Kargil on September 10 and proceed towards Haniskot, with the KDA responsible for coordination along this stretch. From Haniskot to Leh, the march will be coordinated by the Leh Apex Body (LAB).
The march will culminate in Leh on September 24 with a candlelight vigil commemorating the tragic events of September 24, 2025, when four people lost their lives during protests in Leh, while hundreds of others were injured and detained. The organisers said the concluding programme would express solidarity with the victims and their families and reaffirm demands for justice, accountability and a credible resolution of the issues that led to the tragedy.
The KDA stressed that the march is not directed against any individual or political party, but is a peaceful people's movement for the democratic, constitutional and legitimate rights of the people of Ladakh.
The Ladakh Peace and Justice March is being organised by the Socialist Party (India) and has been endorsed by the Leh Apex Body, Kargil Democratic Alliance, National Conference, PDP, CPI(M), CPI(ML), PUCL, NAPM, India Greens Party, Tamil Nadu Green Party, Voters' Party International, Right to Recall Party, Adarsh Sangram Party, Hum Bharat Ke Log, Khudai Khidmatgar, Gandhi Peace Foundation, Rashtriya Yuva Sangathan, Aman Samiti and Samaveshi Bharat Kendra.
Members of Parliament, civil society representatives, social activists and other public figures from different parts of the country are expected to join the march. Well-known social activist Sandeep Pandey is among those expected to participate. The organisers have appealed to social, religious, civil society, civil rights and political organisations across the country to support and join the march.
Those intending to participate in the full foot march have been asked to reach Kargil by September 9, while people may also join the march at any point along the route and participate for a portion of the journey. The organisers have advised participants to allow adequate time for acclimatisation, noting that oxygen levels decrease as one travels from Srinagar towards Kargil and Leh.
Buses and shared taxis are available on the Jammu–Srinagar, Srinagar–Kargil and Kargil–Leh routes, the organisers said, while requesting participants to inform Sajjad Kargili of their travel schedules to facilitate arrangements and coordination.
All stakeholders present at the KDA meeting reiterated their commitment to extending full support to the march and ensuring its successful completion. They stressed that the issues confronting Ladakh should be resolved through dialogue, democratic engagement and peaceful participation of the people.
