India's eCommerce app boom has a retention problem nobody's talking about

Counterview News
India's eCommerce app market is growing at a pace unmatched by any other major economy, but new data from AppsFlyer's State of eCommerce for Marketers in India – 2026 Edition reveals a market navigating sharp seasonal swings, shifting platform dynamics, and emerging retention challenges. According to the report, there is a 42% remarketing pullback and a declining Day 30 retention, signalling trouble beneath the surface.
AppsFlyer, a mobile attribution and marketing analytics platform, founded in 2011 and headquartered in San Francisco, serves as the measurement layer for the app economy, helping marketers understand which campaigns actually drive installs, in-app events, and revenue.
Today, AppsFlyer tracks activity across more than 100,000 active mobile apps in over 190 countries, with a customer base spanning 15,000 brands—including one in three Fortune 500 companies.
For the India report, AppsFlyer analyzed 2.24 billion installs, $290 million in ad spend, and 1.63 billion remarketing conversions across 210 shopping apps. It paints a picture of a market that is compounding fast—but unevenly.
The Navratri Effect: A 136% Surge
India's festive eCommerce season doesn't peak at Diwali. According to the report, the actual demand spike arrives during Navratri, well ahead of the festival of lights.
"India's Android installs climbed 136% year over year between Q3 2024 and Q3 2025, the quarter capturing India's Navratri festive season," the report states. "AppsFlyer's India Festive Report 2026 confirms this is Shopping's actual demand peak, not Diwali itself."
Globally, installs grew just 28% over the same period. Organic installs drove even more of that growth, up 143% year over year against 18% globally.
The broader trend extends beyond the festive quarter. "Looking at the full two-year period, from Q3 2024 to Q2 2026, India's installs still grew 85% versus just 2% globally," the report notes.
India's eCommerce websites drew roughly 58 billion visits over the past year, growing 28% year over year—the fastest of any major market tracked. The country's Q-commerce market has scaled into a $10 billion-plus GMV segment, accounting for roughly 15% of all eCommerce GMV.
Remarketing Spend Falls 42% as UA Climbs
One of the report's most striking findings is the divergence between remarketing and user acquisition spending.
"Between Q4 2025 and Q2 2026, India's remarketing ad spend fell by 42%, while UA spend rose by 10%," the report reveals. "India's remarketing spend reached its highest level in the full two-year window in Q4 2025, following a steady build through the first half of 2025."
The peak likely reflects re-engaging users acquired during the Q3 Navratri surge, timed around Diwali. The subsequent drop tracks the festive cycle winding down—a seasonal pullback rather than a strategic move away from remarketing, according to the analysis.
Remarketing conversions on Android grew 118% year over year between Q3 2024 and Q3 2025, far outpacing a 23% global gain, before falling 62% in a single quarter by Q2 2026.
Retention Cracks Emerge
Day 30 retention on Android remained essentially flat through 2025 before falling 41% in the two quarters between Q4 2025 and Q2 2026. Globally, the same shape appears but is softer, with retention falling 30% over the final two quarters.
"Whatever is affecting retention arrived recently rather than building gradually over the year, and the effect compounds the longer a user has gone since install," the report states. "That timing and shape together suggest the reactivation window, roughly two to eight weeks after install, is where this shift is concentrated."
Day 1 and Day 7 retention follow the same timing but at a gentler scale—Day 1 fell 8% and Day 7 fell 16% in that same window.
India's Dominance in Global Shopping Metrics
India's share of global Shopping app activity is staggering. Among measured countries (excluding China), India accounts for:
- 71% of Android sessions
- 63% of Android installs
- 47% of organic installs
"The pattern across all four metrics points to the same signal from different angles: India generates a large share of global install and engagement volume in Shopping, while commanding a smaller share of the global ad dollars behind that activity," the report notes.
India holds 19% of global Android UA spend, second only to the United States at 48%. On iOS, India holds just a 2% share of UA spend, while the U.S. commands 62%.
Fraud Rates Improve, but Android Ticks Up
India's fraud rate sits well below global averages on both platforms. The Android fraud rate fell from 10% in Q3 2024 to 3% in Q2 2026—a 75% improvement—while the global rate fell 66% to 7%. On iOS, India's rate dropped 94% to 1%.
However, the most recent quarter shows a reversal: "India's Android rate rose 30% between Q1 2026 and Q2 2026, while the global Android rate fell 25% over the same window."
The report calls this "a small move in absolute terms, but it runs counter to the broader improving trend and is worth watching."
Platform Split: Android Closing Gap, iOS Lead Narrowing
India's Share of Paying Users on Android is 11% below the global figure as of Q1 2026—but that gap has been closing, with Android SOPU growing 18% between Q3 2024 and Q1 2026 while the global figure remained flat.
On iOS, the relationship reverses. India led the global benchmark by 6% as of Q4 2025, but that lead has narrowed to just 2% by Q1 2026, with India's iOS SOPU falling 9% while global iOS SOPU rose 3%.
"This points to a genuine platform difference in how India's user base converts to paying status, and a directional one worth watching rather than a fixed gap," the report states.
What Marketers Should Do
The report offers five key recommendations:
1. Shift some acquisition budget to iOS — The platform converts users to paying status at a meaningfully higher rate
2. Audit Android's traffic sources now — The recent fraud uptick breaks from a two-year improving trend
3. Rebalance remarketing against UA spend — Plan for Q4 remarketing budgets to trend toward 2025 peaks as the next festive period approaches
4. Target the two-to-eight-week reactivation window — Day 30 retention fell sharply in the same quarters remarketing spend pulled back
5. Weight paid over organic in 2026 planning — Paid installs overtook organic in absolute volume by Q1 2026, a shift that didn't happen globally
The AI Query Gap
The report also includes a global analysis of over 8,000 AI-assistant queries from nearly 400 eCommerce brands, finding that campaign-level performance across UA and remarketing dominates at 64% of questions. Monetization questions account for 27%, while engagement and retention queries make up just 9%.
"Remarketing already commands substantial attention in how marketers query performance data, yet remarketing spend itself fell sharply over the same period this report covers," the report notes. "The tools and attention are already pointed at remarketing performance, while the retention mechanics underneath it—which explain why users stop coming back—get a smaller share of that same analytical energy."
