Jamalpur voter deletion claims trigger complaint to Gujarat election official

The Minority Coordination Committee (MCC) has written to the Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer alleging attempts to remove eligible Muslim voters from the electoral rolls in Ahmedabad’s Jamalpur constituency. In a letter dated January 18, 2026, MCC convener Mujahid Nafees said several Form 7 applications seeking deletion of names had been filed against registered voters in multiple parts of the assembly segment.

The complaint cites the case of Arab Farid Miyan, listed as voter number 823 in Part 19, who has reportedly been marked as deceased despite being alive. The MCC claims the objection against him contains the wrong voter card reference. The letter also mentions Jamalpur municipal councillor Rafik Shaikh, whose name has allegedly been targeted for removal based on a change of address, even though the objecting applicant belongs to a different polling part.

According to the group, nearly 300 Form 7 applications have been recorded from one locality alone, and it estimates that close to 20,000 deletion requests may have been submitted across the wider constituency. The committee described the development as an organised effort linked to a political party and aimed at reducing Muslim voter strength.

The MCC has demanded that objections filed by third parties should not automatically trigger deletions, that special verification camps be held to investigate mass objections, and that individuals filing baseless claims face legal action. It also urged authorities to examine the political affiliation of people submitting repeated challenges. The letter requests prompt intervention from election officials and asks to be informed of the action taken. Copies have been sent to the Chief Election Commissioner in New Delhi.

The allegations come at a time when Gujarat’s electoral roll revision process is underway and objections to voter entries are being processed across the state.
