Early childhood indoctrination? Our present-day teaching of maths is 'not secular'

By CK Raju*

In the context of the huge controversy the last few days over the "USA Today" article whether math is racist, some people might be happy to know about the following. My keynote/ distinguished lecture on "Euclid must fall" at the Universities of Tübingen and Pretoria is now published as two articles:
The first article explains the church origins of racism through the church instigation and support for genocide and slavery in Americas, and the systematic build-up of a false history of science, since the Crusades, to assert Christian/White/Western superiority as justification for genocide, slavery, and colonialism. The second article is on the false and racist terminology of the “Pythagorean theorem”, a term repeated 32 times in our class X NCERT math text.
I understand that this sort of early childhood indoctrination deeply affects colonised minds, and that colonised Indians hence fanatically support this brazenly false terminology of “Pythagorean theorem”, long used to bolster racism. (also see Sage Journal). “Fanatically” because there is no evidence for “Pythagoras” or “Euclid” (e.g. my Rs 2 lakh prize for evidence about “Euclid" standing unclaimed for a decade).
Worse, regardless of who wrote the “Euclid” book, there are no axiomatic proofs in it (any manuscript): axiomatic proofs were an invention of the Crusading church to suit the politics of its crusading theology of reason, against Muslims. Such blatant lies (about "superior" axiomatic proofs) in a book which lacks them are not sustained for centuries without an agenda.
The key consequence: our present-day teaching of mathematics (a compulsory school subject) is not even secular. (Some of the resulting science is still pro-church and against Muslims, Hindus etc.) But our secularists and “rationalists” seem fully content with this state of affairs, and their consequent ignorance of math acts as an opiate.
What is hilarious is the colonised belief that their ignorance of math is somehow “natural”, not a result of abysmally bad colonial/church education, and that their consequent forced reliance on only (Western-approved) mathematicians is equally “natural”, and this blind belief in is actually the hallmark of “scientific temper”!
The colonised believe that formal mathematicians, whose livelihoods depend on it, are the best judges of whether or not the math we teach is secular, and can decide it without public debate (for our math curriculum is decided secretively by committees behind closed doors), and the membership of the committees is decided by Western certificates of approval (e.g. PhD from Cambridge).
This is exactly like saying that Brahmins are the best judges of the Lokayata criticism of the Vedas as a means of livelihood of Brahmins, and they have the further right to decide secretively! (Of course, traditionally India had a better system of open public debate.)
The foolishness and fanaticism of the colonially educated apparently knows no limits.
Here is another article which exposes the theft of the Indian calculus by Newton and Leibniz, and how it has led to a cul-de-sac for frontline technology development in the US.
As the "Euclid must fall" articles explain, the West has built up a systematically false history of science: a crusading model (e.g. Euclid), an Inquisitional model (e.g. Copernicus, Clavius, Tycho, Kepler etc.) and a "Christian Discovery" model (e.g. attribution of calculus to Newton and Leibniz, experimental method to Bacon etc.).
But the colonized who mostly (a) know zilch about math and science just because of colonial education (which they nevertheless keep saying came for the sake of science!) are (b) deeply attached to those stories of false gods of science, solely due to childhood indoctrination (no evidence or knowledge needed).
So, those who don't know calculus but are unhappy with my takedown of Newton and Leibniz, can also respond to my takedown of the missionary argument (echoed a few years ago by Prabir Purkayastha in "Ganashakti").
The bad argument is that Pythagoras is "superior" compared to the sulba sutra, since he purportedly provided a proof of the theorem named after him. This involves only IX standard math. Of course, I see the electoral logic, but for the life of me, I cannot understand why some Indian Marxists follow in the footsteps of missionaries and want to prove that everything Indian is inferior.

Reacting to the above email alert by Prof Raju, Dr S Faizi said:
It is important to bring out the legacy of science in ancient India, China, Arab world and Africa eclipsed by western science. Joseph Nidam's work on China was excellent, Fritjolf Kapra's Tao Physics was meant to be something similar about Indian science but failed. Huge lot of new findings about ancient African knowledge system are happening, entire libraries of ancient books are discovered for West Africa....
Legitimate research on ancient indian science is severely damaged by the Hindutwa claim of things like first genetic engineering, plastic surgery and so on.
I am looking for a copy of this old book Hindu Chemistry by a Bengali author/chemist, detailing how the caste system has impaired the scientific enterprise; any help to find a copy would be appreciated.
To this CK Raju replied:
First, you have completely missed my central concerns, expressed in the calculus article, about the bad math teaching resulting from the utterly false history in Indian school texts, such as the false history (class XI text) that Newton discovered calculus, or the false history (class IX text) that Greeks did some superior type of math.
My related concerns are that those false claim in our school text hide the church intervention in math, which ensures (a) that the compulsory math we teach is not even secular, and (b) holds back the development of technology in India as much as in the US. These issue apparently don't concern you: what does it matter if Indians are today bad at math, as so many colonially educated people are, and what does it matter if India consequently falls behind in technology? But those issues do concern me.
I also understand that the colonised mind is very comfortable with false history so long as it is of church/White/Western origin, whether that is false history on the Crusading model (Euclid) or the Inquisitional model (e.g. Copernicus, Clavius), or on the Christian Discovery model (Newton, Leibniz etc.), or the subsequent racist or colonial models. (Euclid must fall, part 1) That is because colonial education came as church education, which indoctrinated the colonized at a young age, into that false history as in our current school texts. You perhaps prefer that false history and want it to continue.
Thus, you have nothing to say even about the failure of NCERT to produce evidence for Euclid in our school texts, or for its constant reiteration of the false and racist terminology of the "Pythagorean theorem" or about Purkayastha's wrong defence of that terminology all documented in the above articles. You haven’t even noticed, the point made in my articles about the false assertions about “axiomatic proofs in Euclid” used by triumphalist historians like Needham, long after that crusading history was publicly exposed as false. Your actions speak a lot louder than your words.
It also does not seem matter to you that that false history is today used to sustain racism, and Western dominance, and was used to justify genocide (of over 100 million native Americans) + slavery (of Blacks) + colonialism (including our own). Don’t expect me to sympathise with those values. Indeed, my “Euclid must fall” articles are all about how to combat racism, by destroying that false history, since it was a talk addressed to Africans.

A comrade in culture and controversy: Yao Wenyuan’s revolutionary legacy

By Harsh Thakor*  This year marks two important anniversaries in Chinese revolutionary history—the 20th death anniversary of Yao Wenyuan, and the 50th anniversary of his seminal essay "On the Social Basis of the Lin Biao Anti-Party Clique". These milestones invite reflection on the man whose pen ignited the first sparks of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution and whose sharp ideological interventions left an indelible imprint on the political and cultural landscape of socialist China.

Two more "aadhaar-linked" Jharkhand deaths: 17 die of starvation since Sept 2017

Kaleshwar's sons Santosh and Mantosh Counterview Desk A fact-finding team of the Right to Feed Campaign, pointing towards the death of two more persons due to starvation in Jharkhand, has said that this has happened because of the absence of aadhaar, leading to “persistent lack of food at home and unavailability of any means of earning.” It has disputed the state government claims that these deaths are due to reasons other than starvation, adding, the authorities have “done nothing” to reduce the alarming state of food insecurity in the state.

Epic war against caste system is constitutional responsibility of elected government

Edited by well-known Gujarat Dalit rights leader Martin Macwan, the book, “Bhed-Bharat: An Account of Injustice and Atrocities on Dalits and Adivasis (2014-18)” (available in English and Gujarati*) is a selection of news articles on Dalits and Adivasis (2014-2018) published by Dalit Shakti Prakashan, Ahmedabad. Preface to the book, in which Macwan seeks to answer key questions on why the book is needed today: *** The thought of compiling a book on atrocities on Dalits and thus present an overall Indian picture had occurred to me a long time ago. Absence of such a comprehensive picture is a major reason for a weak social and political consciousness among Dalits as well as non-Dalits. But gradually the idea took a different form. I found that lay readers don’t understand numbers and don’t like to read well-researched articles. The best way to reach out to them was storytelling. As I started writing in Gujarati and sharing the idea of the book with my friends, it occurred to me that while...

What's behind Donald Trump's 'narco-state' accusation against Venezuela

By Manolo De Los Santos  The US government has revived its campaign to label Venezuela a "narco-state", accusing its top leadership of drug trafficking and slapping hefty bounties on their heads for capture. This campaign, which only momentarily took a backseat, is a strategic fabrication, not a factual assessment. This accusation, particularly amplified under the Trump Administration, is a calculated smokescreen to justify a long-standing agenda: the overthrow of the Venezuelan government and the seizure of its vast oil and mineral resources. A closer examination of the facts reveals a country that has actively fought drug trafficking on its own terms and a US government with a clear and consistent history of destabilizing independent countries in Latin America.

New RTI draft rules inspired by citizen-unfriendly, overtly bureaucratic approach

By Venkatesh Nayak* The Department of Personnel and Training , Government of India has invited comments on a new set of Draft Rules (available in English only) to implement The Right to Information Act, 2005 . The RTI Rules were last amended in 2012 after a long period of consultation with various stakeholders. The Government’s move to put the draft RTI Rules out for people’s comments and suggestions for change is a welcome continuation of the tradition of public consultation. Positive aspects of the Draft RTI Rules While 60-65% of the Draft RTI Rules repeat the content of the 2012 RTI Rules, some new aspects deserve appreciation as they clarify the manner of implementation of key provisions of the RTI Act. These are: Provisions for dealing with non-compliance of the orders and directives of the Central Information Commission (CIC) by public authorities- this was missing in the 2012 RTI Rules. Non-compliance is increasingly becoming a major problem- two of my non-compliance cases are...

1857 War of Independence... when Hindu-Muslim separatism, hatred wasn't an issue

"The Sepoy Revolt at Meerut", Illustrated London News, 1857  By Shamsul Islam* Large sections of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs unitedly challenged the greatest imperialist power, Britain, during India’s First War of Independence which began on May 10, 1857; the day being Sunday. This extraordinary unity, naturally, unnerved the firangees and made them realize that if their rule was to continue in India, it could happen only when Hindus and Muslims, the largest two religious communities were divided on communal lines.

Ground reality: Israel would a remain Jewish state, attempt to overthrow it will be futile

By NS Venkataraman*  Now that truce has been arrived at between Israel and Hamas for a period of four days and with release of a few hostages from both sides, there is hope that truce would be further extended and the intensity of war would become significantly less. This likely “truce period” gives an opportunity for the sworn supporters and bitter opponents of Hamas as well as Israel and the observers around the world to introspect on the happenings and whether this war could have been avoided. There is prolonged debate for the last several decades as to whom the present region that has been provided to Jews after the World War II belong. View of some people is that Jews have been occupants earlier and therefore, the region should belong to Jews only. However, Christians and those belonging to Islam have also lived in this regions for long period. While Christians make no claim, the dispute is between Jews and those who claim themselves to be Palestinians. In any case...
