The National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM), led by well-known civil rights leaders, including Medha Patkar, Prafulla Samantara and Aruna Roy, has strongly condemned the arrest of 20 prominent activists, including Father Stan Swamy, Alok Kujoor and others "respected" activist-intellectuals on charges of sedition.
“They have been also been falsely charge with involvement in Khunti gang-rape and abducting security personnel from the house of member of Parliament Kadiya Munda by the Khunti police inspector”, NAPM has said in a statement.
Pointing out that different IPC sections have been registered against them following a campaign on the social media to defile their character, NAPM said, “The actual purpose of the government is to suppress the rising opposition against the anti-people policies of the Jharkhand government, especially by creating a communal divide and encouraging mobs to go in for take law in their own hand.”
NAPM demanded that the state government should “unconditionally take back sedition and other charges level against the activists”, adding, if this is not done, it would give rise to a popular movement against the government.
