NAJAR appeals to Indian government to reconsider ties with Israel over Gaza crisis

The National Alliance for Justice, Accountability & Rights (NAJAR), a collective of legal professionals associated with the National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM), has written to the Minister of External Affairs urging the Government of India to reconsider its diplomatic and trade relations with Israel in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In its letter, NAJAR expressed concern over the continued blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza, citing United Nations estimates warning of severe food insecurity and the risk of mass civilian casualties, particularly among children. The group described the situation as a serious violation of international humanitarian norms and called for an urgent response from the international community.

The letter referenced findings by the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court regarding Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including allegations of apartheid and genocide. NAJAR highlighted what it sees as a growing body of international legal concern and urged India to align its foreign policy with its longstanding commitment to justice and anti-colonial values.

NAJAR expressed disappointment over India’s ongoing trade and defense engagements with Israel, suggesting that such ties may be perceived as implicit support for actions that are drawing widespread international condemnation. The group urged the government to take a principled stand consistent with its historical support for the Palestinian cause.

Signatories to the appeal include legal professionals, law students, researchers, and activists from across the country. Among them are Meera Sanghamitra from Hyderabad, Pyoli from Delhi, Katyayani Chandola from New Delhi, Lara Jesani from Mumbai, Kanmani R from Chennai, Asif Iqbal from Assam, Ameya from Bangalore, and Adv Dr Shalu Nigam from Delhi NCR.
