Concern over medical neglect amidst transfer of Raghu Midiyami's custody to NIA in Chhattisgarh

The Campaign for Peace and Justice in Chhattisgarh (CPJC) has raised alarm over the ongoing medical neglect and recent transfer to National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody of Raghu Midiyami, former president of the Moolvasi Bachao Manch (MBM). Midiyami, incarcerated in Jagdalpur prison on what CPJC describes as fabricated charges, was sent to NIA custody for seven days on April 9, 2025, despite severe untreated injuries sustained in a February 2025 motorbike accident.
Midiyami’s injuries, including infected leg wounds, deep lacerations, and a crushed finger, have deteriorated due to inadequate medical care. Despite court directives and medical recommendations for surgical intervention, only superficial treatments have been provided. The NIA’s claim that Midiyami is “medically fit” for custody is contradicted by visible infections and untreated wounds, raising serious ethical and legal concerns.
MBM, banned in October 2024 under the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act for its peaceful advocacy for Adivasi rights, was dissolved following the ban. The NIA’s custody request cited Midiyami’s past leadership of MBM as evidence of his “dangerous nature,” a justification CPJC condemns as an attack on democratic dissent.
CPJC demands immediate medical care for Midiyami, the withdrawal of the fabricated case, and his release from custody, highlighting the state’s troubling prioritization of interrogation over health and due process.
