Shiv Nadar University researchers develop rare-earth-free composite material for multifunctional applications

Researchers at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR, have announced the development of a rare-earth-free composite material, ZnO@β-SiC, with applications in energy-efficient lighting, artificial intelligence, and environmental solutions. This groundbreaking innovation marks a significant advancement in materials science.
Led by Professor Aloke Kanjilal and research scholar Mr. Bisweswar Santra, the research addresses global challenges by providing a sustainable, scalable alternative to rare-earth elements. The composite demonstrates exceptional optical, neuromorphic, and photocatalytic properties, making it suitable for solid-state lighting, memory storage systems, AI technologies, and water purification.
One of the highlights of this material is its dual-band photoluminescence spanning visible to near-infrared regions, developed through optimized annealing conditions. It reduces dependence on scarce rare-earth materials and supports India's self-reliance in lighting technologies.
The researchers demonstrated the composite’s forming-free resistive switching devices with ultra-low power consumption (~100 μW) and rapid response times (40 ns), as well as its ability to retain data for extended periods. Its neuromorphic properties open pathways for energy-efficient AI applications, including robotics and intelligent systems.
Additionally, the composite exhibits outstanding photocatalytic properties, efficiently degrading organic pollutants like methylene blue under UV radiation within 25 minutes, offering scalable solutions for wastewater treatment. Its radiation hardness ensures stability under extreme conditions, including space and nuclear environments.
Prof. Kanjilal emphasized the transformative impact of the material, stating, “This innovation not only improves existing technologies but creates new possibilities by integrating sustainability and performance.”
This research underscores Shiv Nadar University’s commitment to interdisciplinary advancements that address real-world challenges.
