UP civil rights advocate fighting for youth 'falsely' implicated in terrorism arrested

In view of the protests planned on December 19, 2019 against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), 72-years-old Advocate Mohammad Shoaib, who is a civil rights leader and is president of the Socialist Party (India), Uttar Pradesh, has been put under house arrest at his residence in Lucknow.
A senior advocate, Shoaib got 14 youth acquitted who were "falsely" implicated in cases of terrorism, said Sandeep Pandey, a Magsaysay award winning social activist and academic, and vice president of the SPI. Shoaib is also the president of civil rights organization Rihai Manch, formed to fight for the right of innocent youth implicated in "false cases."
In the wake of the plannedd protest, in addition to Shoaib, other activists Rajeev Yadav, Sachendra Pratap Yadav, Virendra Gupta, Adiyog and Mohammad Shakeel Qureshi have been served notice by the city magistrate and asked to appear before the court on December 23, 2019 to sign a bail bond for Rs 50,000.
Condemning the act of the government, Pandey said, it "violates of fundamental rights of the citizens guranteed by the Constitution of persons associated with organisations which have full faith in the Constitution". He added, "We demand that the government stop playing with fundamental rights of citizens and withdraw the controversial CAA and NRC."
