A Nirbhaya from Hyderabad: Why is there no protest? Because she is not from Delhi?

By Merlin Francis*This is our second Nirbhaya but from Hyderabad. But you wont hear about her. Because she is not from Delhi. Or maybe because protesting for her tragic death is not part of a bigger plan to overthrow a central government. But she died. She was 25 years old. Mother of a little boy. She died on May 19. After being raped by her live in partner and his friends for three months in confinement...
On the 13th her mum got a call from the boyfriend of the lady that she was throwing up blood and was asked to come down, when the mother reached the place the guy gave the mother Rs 500 and asked for the girl to be taken to the hospital and that he would follow, but the chap absconded..What later followed was a nightmare...
The girl told her mother that her phone was snatched away by her boy friend and he used to get his friends to rape her for 3 months, she was in a relationship with this chap from November 2014 and at the time of her death was 4 months pregnant....When she could not bear it any longer they gave her the chemical from batteries to drink...
Her tongue and lips were burnt and she could not give a statement...she lost her vision and her internal organs were burnt completely...Pieces of her intestines were coming out of her mouth and was bleeding profusely from all areas...
The police initially never filed a complaint when the mother approached them. An online Facebook campaign was started in Hyderabad and the police were pressurised to lodge a formal complaint...The lady though was not in a condition to give a dying declaration....Just before her death she delivered a dead 4 month old fetus...
The man is a financier and real estate agent, his family was threatening the mother to withdraw the complaint and that a sum of 10,000 rupees would be paid...The police were pissed due to the campaign and a press statement was given that she was of immoral character and that she drank whitener which caused her death...the girl when admitted told the doctor "two bhaiyyas" made me drink the chemical...
There are some activists involved in this, including My Choice and some women's groups too... The boyfriend was thrashed for three days and was produced in court, but the others are not picked up as yet as the police state lack of evidence...There is a rally planned up for May 26 and I would be a part of it...
The doctors tried all they could but had given up hope as they mentioned it was an horrific case as she was bitten all over her body and scratched too...and her private parts were mutilated... I have few short videos and pics of her in the hospital but will not be able to share it here...n
It leaves one numbed with sorrow and anger to think what savages some bastards could be.... She suffered terribly for those days she battled for life...
If the police do not act our next initiative will be to approach the State Human Rights Commission...

Planning failures? Mysuru’s traditional water networks decline as city expands

By Prajna Kumaraswamy, Mansee Bal Bhargava   The tropical land–water-scape of India shapes every settlement through lakes, ponds, wetlands, and rivers. Mysuru (Mysore) is a city profoundly shaped by both natural and humanly constructed water systems. For generations, it has carried a collective identity tied to the seasonal rhythms of the monsoon, the life-giving presence of the Cauvery and Kabini rivers , and the intricate network of lakes and ponds that dot the cityscape. Water transcends being merely a resource; it is part of collective memory, embedded in place names, agricultural heritage, and the very land beneath our feet. In an era of rapid urbanization and climate-induced land–water transformations, understanding this profound relationship with the land–water-scape is strategic for sustainability, resilience, and even survival.

Why was this BJP leader forced to call off marriage of his daughter with Muslim boy?

By Vidya Bhushan Rawat*  A marriage of two individuals belonging to different faiths was ultimately postponed as the 'champions' of the social morality dominated the discourse and threatened the father of the girl who happened to be the chairman of Pauri city municipality. Yashpal Benam, a BJP leader, posted the invitation of his daughter's wedding with a Muslim boy from Uttar Pradesh. Both the boy and the girl became friend during their B Tech course and were in relationship. There were reports that they already got married in the court but we don't know the reality. Perhaps the family of the girl wanted to send a message of 'acceptability' and 'appreciation' of such a marriage by the society. Invitations were sent to all but soon after it went wide spread on the social media, the champion of Hindu dharma jumped into the fray and started threatening the father. There were hundreds of calls asking the father hundreds of questions about the marriage. What...
