Making a statement on the 3.5-Richter scale earthquake in Maharashtra's Nandurbar district (Savarde, Shahada), which is near the Sardar Sarovar dam, prominent social activist Medha Patkar of the Narmada Bachao Andolan said, "Not only Sardar Sarovar, but 30 major dams built on Narmada river are on the main fault line. The question has already raised several times as to what damage the large reservoir of Sardar Sarovar cause in case of a bigger earthquake."
Pointing out that officials admit that that a 7-Richter scale scale earthquakes are also possible here, Patkar said, "Nothiing has been for the safety of the dam other than keeping an earthquake register." Worse, she added, "The entire information of earthquake measurements is carried out only in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and its details are kept a secret people of the local valley. There is reason to ask, what would be the consequences of ignoring warning or, say, tsunami?"
